Osteoporosis continues to be a highly debilitating and expensive disease in older adults. Although recognition of osteoporosis as a significant health care challenge has increased; comprehensive diagnosis, proactive risk assessment and aggressive treatment across disease stages is needed. This symposia will discuss novel treatment options and emerging strategies for disease management and the unique needs of the older adult patient related to co-morbidities and care complexities.
Learning Objectives:
1.Define care considerations and diagnostic indicators for older adults at risk for or diagnosed with osteoporosis 2. Describe opportunities to promote better bone health at all stages of risk and disease progression 3. Compare and contrast treatment options for osteoporosis including biphophonates, calcitonin, estrogen/hormone therapy, parathyroid hormone and selective estrogen receptor modulators with emphasis on selecting the optimal therapy for older adults with care complexities 4. Develop individualized patient care strategies based on medication history, functional status, compliance with therapy and potential safety/side-effects of pharmacologic treatment with the collaboration of the healthcare professional team
