Course Description:
For the first time in a generation Congress has expanded the Medicare program to include outpatient prescription drug coverage for the elderly. For professionals working with older adults and the at-risk seniors they serve, the new law raises more questions than it answers. With the regulations and operational guidance recently published, this session will provide participants with vital information about significant provisions directly affecting day-to-day professional activities in the long-term care setting.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain the implementation timeline of the Medicare Part D drug benefit
  2. Describe the implications of the Medicare Part D drug benefit for the Skilled Nursing Facility Resident and Assisted Living Resident
  3. Explain Medication Therapy Management Services as regulated by the Medicare Part D drug benefit
  4. Discuss the impact on business practices for long-term care pharmacy and consultant pharmacists
  5. Summarize the long-term care operational guidance document released by CMS, as it pertains to the long term care pharmacy performance and service criteria, transition process, formulary provisions, and exceptions and appeals process
